Demo: RYA Powerboat Level 2 at Carsington Water
Two days on the centre's own boat at Carsington Water, working through the RYA Powerboat Level 2 syllabus. The course is for beginners and for people who have driven informally and want the certificate that clubs and hire fleets ask for on inland water.
📋 Key Details
- Duration: 2 days, about 09:00 to 17:00
- Group size: 2 to 3
- Minimum age: 16
- Qualification: RYA Powerboat Level 2, familiar waters, not a coastal endorsement
- Payment: 30% deposit, balance 14 days before
🎯 Key Skills
- Slow-speed handling, including coming alongside and turning in a tight space
- Kill cord, lookout and man-overboard recovery
- Anchoring, securing to a buoy and a simple passage plan
- The collision rules and the habits that keep a small boat safe by day
🧭 What to Expect
Day one starts on the shore with the boat, the kill cord and how the crew is briefed, then moves onto the reservoir for slow manoeuvres. Everyone spends time on the helm. The drills are repeated until the boat does what the driver intends at low speed, including picking up a buoy and bringing the boat alongside.
Day two adds higher-speed work where the water allows, anchoring, and the man-overboard sequence, plus a short theory session on rules and planning. The assessment is practical. Passing leads to the RYA certificate for familiar inland waters. It does not add a coastal endorsement, and the public cannot launch their own powerboats here. All the driving is on the centre's boat.
📍 Location
Carsington Water is a large reservoir on the southern edge of the Peak District, with a visitor centre, parking and a shoreline that works for training when the wind stays moderate.
The boat lives on site, so the course does not involve towing. The meeting point is the visitor centre, postcode DE6 1ST.
✅ Prerequisites
No previous certificate is required. Candidates need to be 16 or over, able to swim 50 metres, and fit enough for a day of helm time, anchoring and recovery drills.
Tell the instructor about medical conditions that affect balance or time in a lifejacket. Soft-soled shoes and warm layers are needed even in summer.
🤝 Why Choose Us
The group is only two or three, so helm time is real rather than a few minutes at the end of a crowded day. The boat, lifejackets and the certificate on a pass are included.
Training stays on inland water and the page says so. That keeps the certificate honest: familiar waters, on a boat the centre maintains, with an instructor who is on board for both days.
Meet at Carsington Water Visitor Centre, near Ashbourne, postcode DE6 1ST. The boat is on site.

The course runs over two consecutive days, about 09:00 to 17:00 each day, on the centre's own boat. Saturday is the usual start, with Sunday as the second day.
Both days are needed for the certificate. Missing one day means the course cannot be signed off.
No previous powerboat time is required. The course starts with slow handling, the kill cord and lookout, then builds toward the Level 2 tasks.
People who have already driven a small boat still do the same syllabus, so the certificate matches the RYA standard.
The minimum age on this listing is 16, so the certificate is not issued with a supervision endorsement for younger drivers.
Under-16s are not accepted on this particular course. A shorter handling session is the better first go for a younger teenager.
Use of the training boat, a lifejacket and the safety kit are included, as is the RYA certificate when the assessment is passed.
Lunch is not included. Warm, waterproof layers and soft-soled shoes are needed, because the boat is used in all but the worst weather.
This course is taught on inland water at Carsington. It is the familiar-waters Level 2, not a coastal endorsement, and it does not by itself add a coastal ticket.
The copy on the page is deliberate about that. Anyone who needs a coastal endorsement should train on the coast.
A 30% deposit is taken when the booking is confirmed. The balance is due 14 days before the start.
The dates stay held once the deposit is paid. The remaining balance is requested before that 14-day point.
Meet at Carsington Water Visitor Centre, Ashbourne, postcode DE6 1ST. The boat is kept on site, so there is no road trailer to meet elsewhere.
what3words for the visitor centre is uncouth.orders.protected. Allow time for the car park on a sunny Saturday.
Swimming ability is asked at checkout because the course includes man-overboard drills. A confident 50 metres is the standard used here.
Medical conditions that affect balance, grip or time in a lifejacket should be mentioned as well, so the instructor can plan the boat work.
Light wind and rain are normal and the course usually runs. Lightning, or a wind that makes the reservoir unsafe for training, means the days move.
When a day is stopped for weather, another pair of days or a refund of the unused portion is offered.
Cancel at least 48 hours before the first day for a full refund under the moderate terms. Inside that window the standard moderate terms apply to the deposit and any balance already paid.
A weather stop is separate and is moved or refunded. The certificate fee is only due when the assessment is passed and the certificate is issued.
