Demo: Kayak, Canoe and SUP Hire at Carsington Water
Sit-on-top kayaks, a double, an open canoe or a stand-up paddleboard on Carsington Water, in your own time. Pick one hour, two hours or four. A short brief and the buoyancy aids are included.
📋 Key Details
- Craft: single kayak £18, double £28, open canoe £26, paddleboard £16, for one hour
- Lengths: 1 hour, 2 hours at 1.8 times, 4 hours at 3.2 times
- Minimum age: 8, with an adult for anyone under 18
- Meeting point: Carsington Water Visitor Centre
📍 Location
Carsington Water is a wide reservoir on the southern edge of the Peak District, with a marked area for unguided craft close to the visitor centre. You stay inside that area. The far shore and the sailing lanes are pointed out at the brief.
Parking is at the visitor centre, postcode DE6 1ST. Launching is from the pontoon beside it, so there is no car-top shuttle.
✅ Prerequisites
No qualification is required. You should be able to get in and out of a kayak or onto a board with a little help, and wear a buoyancy aid the whole time.
Anyone under 18 comes with an adult. A double kayak or canoe needs two people who can both paddle. Say if anyone cannot swim.
🤝 Why Choose Us
Four kinds of craft on one booking, with lengths that cost less per hour, means a family can mix a board and a canoe without several checkouts. Paddles and buoyancy aids are fitted before launch.
Staff stay at the pontoon for the window you booked. If the wind picks up, they call you in. The aim is a simple hour or afternoon on flat water, with the kit already chosen and checked.
Collect the craft at Carsington Water Visitor Centre, near Ashbourne, postcode DE6 1ST.
Follow the brown signs from the B5035. Arrive 15 minutes before the slot. what3words: uncouth.orders.protected.
- The craft you choose, for the length you book
- A paddle for each person that craft holds
- A buoyancy aid, fitted before launch
- A short brief on where you can paddle
- Transport to and from the meeting point
- Car park fee
- Food and drink
- Wetsuit hire beyond the buoyancy aid, unless a suit is free on the day
- Clothes that can get wet
- Soft shoes or sandals with a strap
- Sun cream and a hat when it is bright
- A dry layer for afterwards
Choose 1 hour, 2 hours or 4 hours when you book. The price of the craft is multiplied by 1, 1.8 or 3.2 for those lengths, so a longer hire costs less per hour.
The clock starts at the session time you pick, from the visitor centre. Please be back at the pontoon at the end of the slot so the next group can launch.
A single kayak or a paddleboard is for one person. A double kayak or an open canoe is for two, and the price is for the craft, not for each seat.
Buoyancy aids and paddles are included for the number of people that craft takes. Children count toward those seats.
The minimum age is 8, and anyone under 18 comes with an adult on the water or on the shore for the whole hire. Under-16s are welcome in the right craft.
A young child in a double or a canoe should sit with an adult who can steer. A solo kayak is for someone who can manage it alone.
No qualification is required. A short brief on how to sit, how to turn and where the boundary is happens before launch.
You should be happy in a buoyancy aid. Say if anyone cannot swim, so the brief can keep that craft closer to shore.
The craft, a paddle, a buoyancy aid and the launch brief are included. Wetsuits can be borrowed when the water is cold, subject to sizes on the day.
You do not take the boat away from Carsington. The hire stays on the reservoir, inside the area shown at the brief.
Meet at Carsington Water Visitor Centre, postcode DE6 1ST. The craft are beside the water there.
what3words is uncouth.orders.protected. Arrive 15 minutes early to be fitted with a buoyancy aid before the clock starts.
Light wind is fine. If the reservoir is too rough to hire safely, the slot is moved or refunded. That decision is made before you launch.
You will not be sent out in conditions the staff would not use themselves. A changed slot can be another time the same day when the water settles, or another day.
Damage beyond ordinary wear is charged. The brief explains what that means, and the craft is checked out and back in with you there.
A lost paddle or a buoyancy aid that is not returned is also chargeable. Tell staff straight away if something breaks on the water.
Buoyancy aids come in a range of sizes and are fitted before launch. Wetsuits, if you want one, are sized at the same time.
If a size is tight, ask for a swap before you leave the pontoon. It is easier than turning around halfway through the hour.
Cancel at least 48 hours before the slot for a full refund under the moderate terms. Inside that window the standard moderate terms apply.
A weather stop, called because the reservoir is not safe to hire, is moved or refunded even inside 48 hours.
